Can You Target Specific Pin Codes in Google Ads India? Local PPC Guide
Published on August 26, 2026
If you run a local business in India, broad city targeting can burn your cash fast (just like letting Google overspend your daily budget).
Let's say your office is in Madhapur or Gachibowli, Hyderabad.
If you set your Google Ads location to "Hyderabad," your ads will show to people in Uppal or Shamshabad—over 35 kilometers away!
When someone calls you from across the city, what happens?
- Your technician spends two hours sitting in traffic.
- You burn vehicle fuel.
- By the time your team arrives, the customer hired someone closer.
Small business owners ask me this all the time: "Can I target only my local 6-digit PIN codes on Google Ads?"
The short answer is YES.
But there is a catch you need to know so your ads don't stop running.
How to Target Indian PIN Codes in Google Ads
Google Ads lets you paste 6-digit Indian postal PIN codes directly into your location settings.
Here is how you do it:
- Open your campaign and go to Settings → Locations.
- Select Enter another location and click Advanced search.
- Check the box that says Add locations in bulk.
- Paste your list of 6-digit PIN codes (like
500081,500032,500033for Hyderabad, or560001,560034for Bangalore). - Click Search, then click Target all.
Google will highlight those exact postal areas on the map.
The Big Catch: Why PIN Code Targeting Can Fail in India
Targeting only PIN codes sounds perfect. But in India, two big problems can happen:
1. Inaccurate Mobile Phone Towers
In India, millions of people search on mobile data (Jio, Airtel, Vi). Mobile cell towers often report user locations at the city level rather than the exact street corner.
If you target only two small PIN codes, Google might not be able to identify enough users. Your ads will show the warning:
"Eligible (Limited): Low Search Volume"
2. People Don't Search by PIN Code
Indian buyers don't search "biometric machine dealer 500081".
They search:
- "biometric dealer near me"
- "cctv camera installation in hitec city"
- "security systems dealer kondapur"
If your targeting boundary is too tiny, you miss genuine buyers who work in your area but happen to live three streets over.
The Better Strategy: The 3-Step Local Formula
To get plenty of leads without traveling across the city, use this 3-step strategy:
Step 1: Radius Targeting Around Your Office
Instead of picking 20 tiny PIN codes, set a 10 km or 15 km radius around your office address.
- Example: Target a 12 km circle around Madhapur.
- This keeps your team within a 25-minute drive while giving Google enough search volume to find buyers.
Step 2: The #1 Setting You MUST Change
This is where almost every beginner loses money.
By default, Google sets your location option to:
"Presence or interest: People in, or who've shown interest in your targeted location"
TURN THIS OFF IMMEDIATELY.
If you leave this on, someone in Delhi or Dubai who searches "Hyderabad services" can see your ad!
Change it to:
"Presence: People in or regularly in your targeted locations"
This forces Google to show ads only to people who are physically standing inside your area.
Step 3: Exclude Distant Zones
Under Excluded Locations, explicitly block the outer areas and neighboring districts you don't want to travel to (or use campaign-level negative keywords as outlined in our 30-point Google Ads audit checklist).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can Google Ads target multiple PIN codes in bulk?
Yes. In the Advanced Location settings, check the "Add locations in bulk" box. You can paste up to 1,000 postal codes at once.
What is the minimum radius you can target in Google Ads?
You can target as small as a 1 km radius (or 1 mile) around an address, landmark, or GPS coordinate. However, a 5 km to 15 km radius usually works best for service businesses in Indian cities.
Why am I getting leads from outside my target city?
You almost certainly have Google's default "Presence or Interest" setting turned on. Change it to "Presence" only, and add negative location exclusions for cities you do not serve.
Does local targeting cost more per click?
Not necessarily. In fact, because your ads and landing pages will be much more relevant to local searchers, your Click-Through Rate and Quality Score will rise (learn how the Google Ads auction actually calculates this), which often lowers your Cost Per Click.
